FIFA WORLD CUP 2026 · Group E
Germany come into FIFA World Cup 2026 with renewed purpose after deeply disappointing group-stage exits at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
Under Julian Nagelsmann, a new generation of players has emerged, quicker, more direct, and more internationally competitive. Germany want to remind the world that they are still one of football's elite nations.
Only Brazil (five) have won the World Cup more times than Germany (four). Their victories came in 1954, 1974, 1990, and 2014, the last of those a memorable 1-0 defeat of Argentina in Brazil, courtesy of Mario Götze's extra-time winner.
That 2014 side also inflicted the famous 7-1 semi-final defeat on Brazil. The memory of those highs makes the 2018 and 2022 group-stage exits all the more difficult to accept.
Nagelsmann's Germany favor a high-energy, vertical style, pressing aggressively, transitioning quickly, and using width effectively through overlapping fullbacks and sharp wide attackers.
The base structure is a 4-2-3-1 with flexibility to shift into a back three. The modern Germany team is more direct than their predecessor tiki-taka influenced squads.
Goalkeeper: Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich) — iconic, competing with younger options. Marc-André ter Stegen (Barcelona) — technically exceptional.
Defenders: Antonio Rüdiger (Real Madrid) — imposing, physical centre-back and leader. Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich) — used at right-back but capable across multiple positions.
Midfield: Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen) — creative, technically brilliant young playmaker.
Attack: Jamal Musiala (Bayern Munich) — quick, direct, technically gifted. Leroy Sané (Bayern Munich) — experienced wide player with pace.
Wirtz has emerged as one of the most technically gifted players in European football. His performances at Bayer Leverkusen, including their unbeaten Bundesliga title season, established him as a genuinely world-class creative talent. His ability to receive in tight spaces, turn defenders, and deliver precise final balls makes him Germany's most dangerous creator.
Musiala brings a different dimension to Germany — direct, unpredictable, quick in tight spaces, and capable of creating and scoring goals from a variety of positions. His performances in the 2024 Euros on home soil announced him as a world-class player.
Rüdiger's physical presence and aggressive defending give Germany a backbone. His aerial dominance, recovery pace, and willingness to put his body on the line make him one of the most intimidating defenders in the tournament.
Kimmich's versatility is a tactical asset for Germany. Whether deployed at right-back or in midfield, his technical quality, reading of the game, and pressing intensity make him difficult to leave out.
Germany's attack is their most exciting in years. Wirtz, Musiala, and Sané give them creative depth and variety that opponents struggle to plan for. Their pressing intensity under Nagelsmann also makes them difficult to play against for extended periods.
Rüdiger's presence in defense adds leadership and physical intimidation, qualities that are valuable in knockout football.
Goalkeeping remains an area of discussion, Neuer's age means a transition is underway, and transitions between goalkeeper generations have historically disrupted Germany.
Germany can also be vulnerable if their high defensive line is caught by quick counter-attacks from teams with pace in behind.
Germany hosted Euro 2024 and reached the quarter-finals before a narrow extra-time defeat to Spain. It was a positive performance on home soil, competitive, well-organized, and building momentum.
World Cup qualifying was handled comfortably, Germany topped their group with good form heading into the tournament.
Germany are genuine dark horse contenders. Their attacking quality, coaching, and tournament experience as a football nation make them dangerous throughout the competition.
A quarter-final or semi-final is a realistic base. But with Wirtz and Musiala in the form of their lives, and the emotional drive to return to World Cup glory after two painful exits, a deep run and potentially the title cannot be ruled out.
